Located in the heart of Birmingham, the Alexandra Theatre (previously the New Alexandra Theatre), was first built in 1901 and originally named the Lyceum. Opening with an unsuccessful play The Workman, the venue quickly became associated with hosting melodramas, variety shows and pantomimes. After passing through various owners, it is now managed by the Ambassador Theatre Group. Like many theatres, the venue is said to be haunted by ghosts, including that of owner Leon Salberg, who died in his office in 1938. It also hosted former Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who gave a speech there in 1918 as a local MP.
In 2018, the Alexandra Theatre was officially relaunched following a £650,000 refurbishment and now has a seating capacity of 1,347 with a plush, royal blue interior. The theatre celebrated its re-opening by hosting the first stop of that year’s Motown the Musical tour. Now fondly referred to simply as The Alex by locals, it is best-known for popular events such as touring productions, entertainment and comedy from across the UK and West End.
Suffolk Street Queensway, Birmingham, B5 4DS
The Alexandra Theatre is situated a stone’s throw away from Birmingham New Street Station, which gives rail access across the country. Approximately 5-7 minutes from the theatre you can find the well-known Bullring Shopping Centre and St Martin’s Square, with The Mailbox shopping centre in the opposite direction. There are several places to eat and drink close to the theatre, with the shopping centres also offering many options for pre-theatre dinners and drinks. There are also two casinos nearby, and several other theatres and performance venues.
The bars, and foyer are open up to 90 minutes before a show begins. It is worth arriving early to enjoy the Piano Bar before the show and to avoid large queues getting into the venue.
The Piano Bar on the first floor offers a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments and snacks. Visitors should take advantage of Happy Hour between 6pm and 7pm Sunday - Thursday for pre-show drinks in a relaxed environment.
Please note that the Piano Bar is accessible by stairs only.
Theatregoers can also book the Ambassador Lounge when booking tickets, for bespoke pre-show and interval service including refreshments.
There is a cloakroom in the lobby of the Alexandra Theatre where visitors can store small items for £1 per item. It is best to avoid bringing large items such as suitcases to the theatre as they may not be able to accommodate them. Always allow yourself some extra time if you plan to use the cloakroom as there may be queues.
The venue is close to the Mailbox and Brindleyplace, both great options for canalside dining from outlets such as Zizzi and Gourmet Burger Kitchen. There are lots of popular independent restaurants nearby as well; try Vietnamese Street Kitchen in the Bullring for pho and banh mi, or The Indian Streatery on Bennetts Hill for chaat and dhal.
Staying Cool at Rotunda is a well-reviewed city centre complex just eight minutes’ walk from the theatre, offering modern apartments with spectacular views. Cheaper options include Holiday Inn on Smallbrook Queensway. If you'd like to stay outside of the city centre, leafy Edgbaston is home to the High Field Town House, perfect for overnight boutique stays and gastropub dining.
